Ricky Gervais isn’t left-handed. The British comedian has been spotted signing autographs and holding numerous awards with his right hand, which proves he’s not a southpaw.
Ricky’s Right-Handedness
Proofs of Ricky’s right-handedness are pretty easy to find, even though he never felt the need to confirm he’s not a leftie. Photos and videos that show him signing autographs make it clear that he always uses his right hand to write.
Gervais is actually somewhat of an autograph expert – or at least one of his most iconic characters is. The British comedian said he based the character of Derek on some extremely persistent autograph-hunters that he met over the years.
The Office star isn’t only using his right hand to write – he’s doing the same when picking up awards. He currently has seven BAFTAs, two Emmys, and one Golden Globe on his trophy shelf, and he only held them in his left hand when picking up multiple awards at once.
Gervais has also been spotted completing many other activities with his dominant right hand – like waving and holding all sorts of different objects. There’s obviously no doubt about him being right-handed, but is he a leftie in any other sense?
The Right-Wing Comedian?
Ricky Gervais is obviously right-handed, but what side he leans on when it comes to his political views? The Office star never publicly called himself a liberal or a conservative, but he supported Jeremy Corbyn in the 2017 UK general election, making it clear he’s leaning to the left.
Since he equally enjoys mocking people of different political affiliations, conservatives thought he might be on their side after the Golden Globes in 2020. Gervais wrapped up his monologue by telling celebrities in attendance they should avoid making political speeches.
He addressed the Hollywood elite by saying, “You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world” and criticized them for working with morally questionable corporations like Apple, Amazon, and Disney.
Conservative viewers welcomed his jokes with open arms but failed to realize that he never had a problem making fun of them, as well. During an appearance on The Last Laugh with Matt Wilstein, Gervais explained he wasn’t trying to affiliate himself with any political movement, but simply call out the hypocrisy of “woke” elites.
“What’s weird about that is it was actually the left on social media that once again said, ‘Oh, he’s alt-right now.’ What could be less right-wing than going after the biggest, richest corporations in the world?” said Gervais.
Left-Handed Co-Stars
Ricky Gervais is not left-handed, but he’s no stranger to working with left-handed people. A couple of his co-stars just happened to be some of Hollywood’s most famous southpaws.
In 2006, Gervais scored his first role in a major Hollywood blockbuster – Night at the Museum. He was cast as Dr. McPhee, the curator of the American Museum of Natural History in NYC, and later reprised his role in the sequels Battle of the Smithsonian and Secret of the Tomb.
This franchise featured several left-handed actors, starting with the leading men Ben Stiller. His close friend and frequent collaborator Owen Willson, who played miniature cowboy Jedediah in this franchise, is also a leftie.
Rebel Wilson and Hugh Jackman, who made a brief cameo in the third Night at the Museum movie, are both left-handed. That’s not the case with Rami Malek, despite the viral picture that shows him trying to sign autographs with both hands.
Gervais played one of the lead roles in Muppets Most Wanted alongside left-handed actress Tina Fey. He also voiced a robot dog in Spy Kids: All the Time in the World, which starred three leftie actors – Jessica Alba, Joel McHale, and Mason Cook.
